Welcome back, Carrie! Tell us about this new story.
In “Right Before Their Eyes,” the sequel to “Emma’s Hero,” we follow Mason Hughes as his journey continues on to choosing a medical school, Clare Martin as she juggles caring for her dementia-ridden grandmother while working as a social worker in the foster care system and dating a career-driven man, and one of Clare’s foster teens, Lucia Roberts as she loses her foster home and struggles through life in an unwelcoming group home.
Mason showed up on the page for me, continuing his story. He discovered a lot about himself in “Emma’s Hero” and started to fall for Clare, but he still had a lot to learn in the relationship realm. His own insecurities have firmly planted him in the friend zone with Clare dating another man, and Mason is facing a choice for medical school that may move him across the country.
I think the thing that is so relatable about Mason in this story is his struggle to follow what God is calling him to do when it forces him to ultimately have to act boldly in areas of his life in which he’s not used to doing so.
Clare has a generous heart that wants to help others. How many times have we said yes to helping our family, only to have other beneficial work also demand our time and spread ourselves too thin? So relatable, at least for me 🙂 And it’s in those times where we often see God work and learn a lot about the people in our lives. This proves true for Clare as well.
Lucia is a new character added to the series in this book, and it was important for me to add her as a point-of-view character. As an adoptive mom of two children and bio mom to five others, I’ve watched teens from many places in life. Sometimes it’s hard to understand how to love them where they are and help them. And it can even seem like they are causing trouble and it’s hard to understand why. I wanted to walk with you in the shoes of a teen who’s had her life turned upside down, again, and dig into the “why” of the choices she’s making.
I think I learned the most from Lucia while writing her story, and each time I reread “Right Before Their Eyes” she ministers to me as a mother, compelling me to look deeper into the story of each teen who walks through my door.
Thanks so much for sharing about your book, Carrie. There are so many relatable themes in Right Before Their Eyes, I think every reader will find something to inspire, challenge, or encourage them.

Sometimes the love you need most looks different than you imagined.
Clare Martin thought nothing of agreeing to live with her dementia-ridden grandmother when her parents left on mission. Balancing that with her job as a social worker and the expectations of her career-driven boyfriend proved doable-until Grandma started a house fire.
Mason Hughes has loved Clare for years, but the time was never right to tell her and now she’s dating someone else, fixing Mason firmly in the friend zone. He’s working to be a pediatric neurologist, a dream inspired by a special boy with a terminal brain condition, and must choose a medical school. Finances are so tight he’s forced to consider a program across the country, a troubling fact he’s kept secret.
Lucia Roberts, a seventeen-year-old on Clare’s caseload, loses her foster home and is placed in an unwelcoming group home. At every turn she’s met with rejection and becomes desperate for any proof she has value-enough to make choices that could affect the rest of her life.
When Grandma Dottie and Lucia’s paths take a dangerous turn, Clare frantically tries to save them. As their lives knit together, will they find the love that’s right before their eyes?

I haven’t tried anything by this author yet, but this story sounds wonderful. The heroine sounds like a kind and generous person, but she has certainly taken on a great deal. Caregiving is not an easy job.
Deena Adams
Cherie, I think you’d love both of Carrie’s books! I encourage you to start with Book One, Emma’s Hero, then you’ll quickly want to read this second one!

Emma’s Hero has “all” the feels a reader could want! And I’ve been waiting for Right Before Their Eyes…… and here it is at last! I’m so excited to dive in and see where this adventure of faith & love & marvelous characters take us!
Carrie, your statement about teens in your interview with Deena ….”Sometimes it’s hard to love them where they are and help them.” …… hit my heart with a huge “thud!” I have some adult folks in my life that I am desperate to help and upon reading your statement….. God just spoke into my heart, encouraging me to just keep on loving them “right where they are”…….and leave the “changing” to Him!!!!!
Thank you for those words…..
Carrie…Deena….Keep on writing! God is using your gift in far more ways than you can imagine!
Blessings to you both! 💖
Deena Adams

Oh, thank you! I’m so glad you enjoyed Emma’s Hero, and I’m especially touched that God was able to use something I said to speak to you. It’s always something I have to remind myself of, but so much good can happen when we love people where they are at 🙂

Yes, the premise of Right Before Their Eyes piques my interest. Poor Clare–my mother is dealing with dementia, and my father died with Alzheimer’s. It’s tough on the whole family.
Deena Adams
I’m so sorry for the loss of your dad to Alzheimer’s, Priscilla, and that your mom is dealing with dementia. That has to be so hard.
Carrie Walker
I’m so sorry for your loss. My grandmother also had dementia and she partly inspired Grandma Dottie in this story. If you decide to give the story a try, I pray it’s a blessing for you.
