Walking a Mile in Jane Austenβs Shoes
When we think of Jane and her iconic stories, we might think of beloved characters such as Mr. Darcy or Emma Woodhouse. We might recall favorite scenes like the dance at Netherfield or the moment the Dashwood sisters first enter their small cottage after having to leave their lifelong home behind. So, when I set out to write my first Jane Austen adaption, The Heart of Bennet Hollow (a Pride and Prejudice retelling), for Tyndale House Publishers, I knew that I wanted to capture these iconic moments in the best of ways. Most of all, to honor Jane Austenβs legacy, and the beautiful stories she gifted us.
In writing this adaption, I quickly realized that I had the honor of walking a mile in Janeβs shoes. That I was going to get to look through the lens of her characters from a profound perspectiveβno longer on the outside looking in, but their inner thoughts, goals, dreams and even fears. The best place to begin was with a copy of Pride and Prejudice in my lap. Armed with this iconic story and a trusty highlighter, I set out to discover themes and moments that are not only crucial to this love story but that would emphasize the experiences that Jane was trying to share with us all.
This began a quest of recreating my favorite scenes and moments from the novel, with characters from a different timeβ1900βs Appalachia. The fictitious town of New River, Virginia to be exact. Here, coal dust billows from the mine, Ma Bennet bakes fresh bread at a cast iron stove and the Bennet sisters walk barefoot in the woodlands and meadows of their mountains.
This retelling was a joy to write and I hope for readers, itβs a joy to read. Most of all, it was an absolute honor to get to walk a mile in Jane Austenβs shoes. For the first time, I got to go barefoot not only through the country lanes of my mind and own story setting, but through her personal world. It gave me the chance to share the beautiful themes that Jane put before us. Lessons of family, sisterhood, friendship, wisdom and so much more. I hope that readers enjoy their time spent in Bennet Hollow as much as I did, and that this Appalachian love story will honor Janeβs beautiful creation most of all.
Thank you for your beautiful post, Joanne. I have no doubt you’ve honored Jane well in your retelling. May the Lord bless you abundantly as you continue to write amazing stories for readers to enjoy.

An Appalachian farmer’s daughter and a wealthy businessman find a surprising love but must reckon with what divides them in this retelling of Jane Austen’sΒ Pride and PrejudiceΒ by the award-winning author ofΒ The Lady and the Lionheart.
New River, Virginia. 1904.Β Lizbeth Bennet longs to preserve her family’s farm, securing a future for her and her sisters, a difficult task in their Appalachian coal mining town. Money is scarce, and Lizbeth is determined to find a way without giving up treasured pieces of her family’s legacy. But when the mine is put up for sale, it’s clear change is approaching. A contingent of coal barons descends on the town to investigate whether the mine is worth their investment, among them a young man rumored to be a very rich, eligible bachelor.
William Drake arrives focused on business and keeping his distance from the townspeople, especially those living on land entangled with the mine, including a farmer by the name of Bennet. As William digs through legal issues, his struggle to weigh the potential financial gain against what is right for the community grows more complicated when he meets one of the Bennet daughters.
Despite an awkward first meeting, Lizbeth and William continue to cross paths, and soon Lizbeth questions her first impression of the man she believed to be proud and indifferent. But just as their friendship begins to evolve, a revelation shakes Lizbeth’s tenuous trust, and she learns all may not be as it seems. To determine what is true, and step toward a love she’s barely dared dream of, Lizbeth must confront her own prejudices . . . and decide whether the future she’s always imagined is the one her heart truly wants most after all.
