Tim Bishop: Spotlight on The Road Unveiled

My wife, Debbie, and I have bicycled throughout the United States but have never pedaled through Yellowstone National Park. Call me a chicken, but it’s not a place I plan to visit unless I’m driving. But I have explored it virtually, as I did research for The Road Unveiled.

Yellowstone has much to offer not only tourists but also readers of an inspirational adventure novel, especially one in which the main characters travel on bicycles. With unusual volcanic activity simmering, geysers, hot springs, mud pots, and fumaroles provide stunning visuals and a novel appeal to a traveler’s curiosity.

Adding to the park’s allure, majestic mountains surround Yellowstone Lake while the Yellowstone River flows through the magnificent Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. Thomas Moran’s 19th-century painting of this riveting setting inspired members of Congress to set aside Yellowstone as America’s first national park. Roaming in their unique habitat, grizzly bears, wolves, and bison help attract even more tourists to the region.

You can imagine the hazards for a cyclist, but they don’t deter Lauren Baumgartner in The Road Unveiled. With a free spirit and a background as a missionary in Uganda, she has no qualms about cycling through the park, even though it’s the height of tourist season, with inexperienced RV drivers rubbernecking on the park’s narrow roads. No matter how crowded, any campground in the park will accommodate a cyclist with a tent. But a tent won’t shield Lauren from what roams the woods at night. Or from motorcycling gang members on their way to the liveliest rally in the world.

But God has always protected Lauren. She can’t wait to visit the place her parents always wanted to take their kids. That never panned out. Nor will it, given what happened to the family.

Cycling through Yellowstone is the least of Lauren’s concerns. She’s also fleeing a secret she can’t escape and lugging a longing she’s never been able to satisfy. Meeting these emotional needs means more to Lauren. It’s where hope joins the ride.

Many of us carry burdens deep inside. Maybe they’re dark secrets like Lauren’s or grief like Doug Zimmer’s. He’s the other main character. Perhaps God has fertilized within us an unmet desire to motivate us. He’s not intent on watching us suffer or fall apart—those are ploys of the enemy. Instead, He wants to grow our faith and deliver us, to show us the depth of His love and the might of His power to save.

Lauren’s adventurous spirit and childlike faith lead to perilous scenes that heighten the tension in The Road Unveiled. But beware: traveling by bicycle through the Great American West isn’t for the faint of heart! I won’t be riding my bicycle there anytime soon—unless Debbie talks me into it.

Two wounded hearts. Long, winding roads. And second chances neither saw coming.

Lauren Baumgartner pedals toward Yellowstone National Park, anticipating a grand celebration when she reaches the Atlantic Ocean. But when her wedding plans collapse, old wounds resurface—and a haunting secret still holds her heart hostage.

Traveling alone with bear spray and a one-woman tent, she shares the highway with motorcyclists bound for a massive rally, including gang members who eye her as theirs for the taking.

Doug Zimmer, another lone cyclist, is grappling with loss and wondering if anyone will be alongside him when he figures out what’s next. He isn’t the only one drawn to Lauren’s vitality and spirit.

But Lauren may already be in too deep. What she faces on the Golden Prairie Indian Reservation tests her courage—and her faith—more than anything she encountered as a missionary in Uganda.

A woman with a secret and a man healing from loss pedal the rugged roads of the American West on a quest for love and purpose that leads to unexpected horizons.

There’s always an escape. Sometimes you need to search long and hard for the right one.

After losing all he once cherished, Doug Zimmer follows his wife’s parting bread crumbs and rides up the Pacific coast—on a bicycle. Armed with a revolver and only a vague plan to get through the months ahead, he aims to end his depression one way or the other.

As spiritual forces wrangle for his soul, he pedals eastward across America. He meets Lauren Baumgartner—a younger adventurer with a vibrant spirit—and a band of zealots who confront his aversion to religion. Accompanying Doug are not only sunny days and the beauty of nature but also the perils of the road, fellow travelers with their own stories, and the hollow silence of solitary campsites playing host to unseen creatures of the night.

A jarring episode on a climb through a treacherous pass brings Doug face-to-face with life and death. Will Doug’s adventure deliver him from loneliness and lament . . . or hurtle him to an abrupt end?

My characters do a bit of camping too! Each day on a bicycle tour is unique. You can plan your route, but you’ll never know just what you may encounter. One evening, while cycling into Wabash, Indiana, a deer squirted out from under a roadside fence, where it appeared stuck, and skidded across a country road right in front of Debbie. It was hard to see the action due to the setting sun, but it sure got our attention! It was gone in a flash. Two of our more fascinating route destinations were 1) cycling along the Niagara Recreation Trail to the head of the Horseshoe (Niagara) Falls on the Canadian side – I mean right beside them, where you could feel the spray! and 2) cycling the Mount Vernon Trail into Washington, DC, and ending up at the Lincoln Memorial! There was another intriguing arrival out west, but I’m going to avoid a spoiler. My characters in The Road Unveiled will take you there!
