Sami A. Abrams: Suspense, Animals, Criminal Justice & More

I’m excited for you to hear from Sami Abrams about her writing and her Love Inspired Romantic Suspense, Twin Murder Mix-Up. Sami has offered a paperback (US residents only) or an ebook as a giveaway. Comment on her interview by August 23 for a chance to win.

Welcome, Sami! We’d love to hear a little about you and your family.

I’m originally from Kansas, but now live in California. I’ve been married for 31 years and have two adult kiddos. One lives in Colorado and the other in North Carolina so I spend a lot of my off time traveling to see them.

I’m sure you miss your kids, but at least you have some beautiful states to visit! We get to go to Dallas every year to visit our oldest daughter. As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

If things would have been different when I graduated high school, most likely I would have a degree in criminal justice, or I would have gone into the military. But due to circumstances, I got my bachelor’s degree in education and a masters in psychology.

Now you’re using that interest in criminal justice to write suspense novels. Love it. Are any of your stories inspired by true events or personal history?

There is a piece of true events and personal history in each one of my stories. I tend to find one little thing to build my stories around. It can be small like a personality type or large like an actual event but every book has an element of truth somewhere in it.

That’s cool. Do you have any pets? Do they find their way into any of your stories?

I grew up on a farm and love animals. So it only made sense that we have a few. 😊 We had three cats, but only one is still with us. However, my son has a cat and my daughter a cat and a dog. I’m sure one if not two or three will eventually find their way into a story, but so far, the only animal I’ve included is my sister-in-law’s air-scent dog.

That’s fun! How did you select the names for your characters?

Some people are very methodical and look at the meaning of names and thoroughly research them. I’m not that person. I use a baby name search online and read through the names until something feels right. It truly is a gut feeling. So, if I’m asked to change names, it’s really hard for me to do.

If you could only publish one book in your lifetime, which of your novels would you choose?

This is an easy one. It would be one of my unpublished novels. It really is the story of my heart. So, fingers crossed that someday it will see the world.

I hope it does! What does a typical day in your writing life look like?

I’m a teacher by day, so I spend my day at school, then come home and write for a couple of hours four out of five days. I do spend time on the weekends making up any time I lost out on during the week.

What is one of your favorite quotes from Twin Murder Mix-Up?

I love the scene where Keith is sitting in a recliner with his baby and is asking his four-month-old son what he should do.

“Keith sat with his son snuggled in his arm, the sling awkwardly laid over Carter’s belly. ‘Ah, buddy, what am I going to do? I messed things up royally with your aunt Amy—or do I call her your momma? Are you as confused as I am?’”

Who can resist a man with a baby? How many unpublished and unfinished manuscripts do you have? Any plans to pursue publication for any of them?

I have two complete manuscripts and two more that I have the first drafts completed. At the moment, I’m in process of working toward a plan to publish all four.

What do you enjoy most about being a writer?

I love my writer friends. Being an extrovert by nature, it’s hard to just sit and write without someone to talk to.

The Christian writing community is amazing. What’s next from you?

My next Deputies of Anderson County book, Detecting Secrets, will be out February 23, 2023. I also have one more in the series to write, plus a novella and novel in the Elite Guardians series.

Thanks so much for sharing with us, Sami! May God continue to bless you in your writing and publishing journey.

A case of mistaken identity…
has lethal results

After capturing a murder on her camera, photographer Amy Baker becomes the next target—but her identical twin is killed instead. Now on the run with her sister’s newborn, Amy has only one person to turn to—Detective Keith Young, her childhood crush. But when they discover Keith is the baby’s father, can he regain Amy’s trust to keep them safe…before the killer strikes again?

Awarding-winning author Sami Abrams grew up hating to read. It wasn’t until her 30’s that she found authors that captured her attention. Now, most evenings you can find her engrossed in a Romantic Suspense. In her opinion, a crime and a little romance is the recipe for a great story.

She lives in Northern California, but she will always be a Kansas girl at heart. She has a love of sports, family, and travel. However, a cabin at Lake Tahoe writing her next story is definitely at the top of her list.
