Take it away, Felicia!
For me, every book starts out with the characters. When Secrets Come Calling started while I was walking my dog. I “overheard” a conversation between Caitlin and sister-in-law, Shannon, about Dax and why Caitlin broke up with him. That conversation is still almost word-for-word what I originally heard. From there the characters began to form.
Main characters always come to me with their names, careers, and issues. Once I get those first details, I just wait to see what story they want told. And the story Caitlin and Dax wanted to tell was how to deal with trauma/loss, the grief associated with it, and working through the pain toward healing. She and Dax both wrestle with God. They have big, life-changing questions about what has happened in their lives and who they are because of those events.
My hope is that their wrestling inspires readers to bring their own questions and woundings to God and ask him to help them work through them. I feel that fiction writing is a great way to experience the healing process because there are people who will never pick up a self-help book on a subject, but they will read a great story. And being in the character’s head as they work through their issues can create a great deal of empathy in the reader and also remove some of the scary often associated with confronting our past hurts. Yes, it will be painful. Yes, it will be hard work. But the benefits on the other side of the process are incredibly freeing.
Thanks for sharing, Felicia! I totally agree with you about addressing subjects in fiction that can help people work through the healing process. And you do that so well in this book!
My review of When Secrets Come Calling:
“An enjoyable second-chance romance with deep themes of grief, loss, long-held secrets, and forgiveness. If you like true-to-life stories with light suspense, a prominent spiritual thread, and flawed characters who overcome adversity and strongholds, you’ll want to check out this author’s newest offering.”

Past secrets. A second chance. But can the truth really set them free?
When former University of Alabama and Titans wide receiver Dax Carpenter learns his father is accused of a forty-year-old robbery and murder, he turns to the only person he trusts to discover the truth: his ex-girlfriend, Caitlin Fitzhugh.
Caitlin, a cold-case specialist with the Alabama State Division of Investigations, wants nothing to do with the case nor Dax. Not only is the evidence against Dax’s father already condemning, she can’t risk having her heart broken—again.
Caitlin’s boss, however, ignores her arguments, and she begrudgingly takes the consult, convincing herself she can keep the case and her past with Dax separate. But unlike her, longings and memories don’t follow orders. While she lends her skills to the Gulf Shores Police Department in the search for the truth, Dax fends off a possibly career-ending social media hit—leading him to question everything he knows about his father and himself.
As the secrets of both their pasts unfold, they discover whether Dax’s father truly robbed and murdered a man forty years ago but also why Caitlin ended their relationship. Secrets that could drive a wedge between them, forever.
As a child, Felicia Ferguson lived in Kansas, Texas, and Louisiana before her family settled on a horse and cattle farm in Kentucky. For the past ten years, though, she soaked up the Florida sun. But God moved her once again. This time out of the South and into the mountains of Colorado.
Felicia achieved master’s degrees in Healthcare Administration and Speech-Language Pathology, but has written since childhood and dreamed of authoring books that teach and inspire others. An award-winning fiction and non-fiction freelance writer, she is the past president of the Destin chapter of Word Weavers International and incoming Vice President of the Colorado Springs chapter of the American Christian Fiction Writers Association.
Her radio devotional, Build Faith for the Journey, airs Saturdays on Christian Mix 106. When she’s not glued to her laptop, Felicia enjoys hiking, Bible studies with friends, and looking forward to the next story.

Oh, this sounds like a really great book, and right up my alley!!! Felicia’s a new to me author, but she’d fit in my family, as I had a cousin named Felicia and I have cousins whose last name is Ferguson!!
Felicia
Trudy, that’s too funny of a coincidence! I hope you enjoy the book!

Sounds like a great story with just the right amount of suspense. Although I write historical fiction, I’m an eclectic reader. Yes, I do believe that tough subjects can be discussed in fictional stories that resonant and make a difference in the readers life.

Patty Rude
I don’t read a lot of romantic suspense. Or suspense novels in general, which us sort of odd, because my husband and I both enjoy watching NCIS, Law & Order and shows like that. I would love to give Felicia’s book a try.
Deena Adams
If you enjoy those kinds of TV shows, Patty, you would probably enjoy suspense books. And Felicia’s is not too heavy, so it would be a great one to try.
Felicia
Those are some of my favorite shows too. This book has a lot of police procedure in it for the investigation storyline. I think you’ll enjoy it since you’re a fan of NCIS.
Perrianne Askew
